Uber Driver Dispute; Forged Checks; 'Secrets' Scams: Blotter

WINNETKA, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Winnetka and Northfield police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFT
A Scott Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 20 that someone had made an authorized purchase of nearly $890 on a store credit card on Aug. 6.

FORGERY
Someone paid for car repairs with a fake check for $1,130 sometime between July 15 and Aug. 21 in the 0-100 block of Green Bay Road.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole $760 worth of power tools from the rear bed of a truck parked in the 0-100 block of Green Bay Road sometime between 3 p.m. on Aug. 20 and about 8 a.m. on Aug. 22.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE
Someone stole the rear license plate between 1 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 19 from a car parked in the train station lot in the 100 block of Northwestern Drive.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Taylor M. Olson, 21, of the 100 block of North Lexington Parkway in De Forest, Wisconsin, was arrested at 1:41 a.m. on Aug. 20 and charged with fleeing and eluding police following a traffic stop near the intersection of Sheridan Road and Michigan Avenue. He was also issued citations for driving without headlights when required and driving an uninsured vehicle. Later that morning, he was also charged with two counts of theft in connection to previously reported incidents in the 500 block of Winnetka Avenue.
Five men arrested at the intersection of Peterson and Cicero avenues in Chicago around 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 were charged with felony cannabis possession on Aug. 29. A Wilmette police officer spotted their vehicle after it was reported to be involved in an armed robbery in the 900 block of Ash Street in Winnetka.

INCIDENTS
'SECRETS' SCAM
A Lincoln Drive resident reported receiving a note demanding $14,700 worth of Bitcoin to prevent the release of compromising information. The resident did not make any payment.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Green Bay Road resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 24 that someone had taken possession of their credit card and racked up at least $4,000 in charges on it.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole an unlocked Buick SUV with a key fob left inside while parked in the 1100 block of Pebblewood Lane prior to 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 25.
'SECRETS' SCAM
A Vernon Avenue resident reported at 10:36 a.m. on Aug. 26 that someone had sent them a message demanding $14,500 worth of Bitcoin in order to prevent the release of compromising information.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 32-year-old Glencoe man was issued citations for possession of cannabis and driving with only one headlight around 11:02 p.m. on Aug. 26 following a traffic stop in the area of Green Bay and Westley roads.

INCIDENTS
FRAUD
An employee at a law firm in the 400 block of Central Avenue reported on the afternoon of Aug. 21 that someone had made numerous unauthorized charges on the business' bank account.
FORGERY
An employee at a country club in the 2100 block of Sunset Ridge Road reported on the morning of Aug. 22 that a check that had been sent to a vendor had been altered and cashed by someone else.
HARASSMENT
An employee of a business in the 500 block of Sunset Road reported on the morning of Aug. 22 that a former acquaintance had been sending them unwanted emails.
THEFT
A Highland Park resident reported someone stole their wallet on Aug. 22 while they were shopping at a business in the 300 block of Happ Road.
UBER DISPUTE
Police were called to the 300 block of Walnut Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 25 for a report of a dispute between an Uber driver and a passenger. After police spoke with both people involved, the driver provided the passenger with a refund and they went separate ways.
ARRESTS
A 23-year-old Chicago man was arrested at 7:02 p.m. on Aug. 25 and accused of driving 38 mph above the speed limit in the 1900 block of Willow Road.
