The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

TECH SUPPORT SCAM
A Lincoln Avenue resident reported on July 9 that someone had tricked them into providing their credit card information in a tech support scam. The resident cancelled their credit card and suffered no financial loss.

ATTEMPTED BIKE THEFT
A man who identified himself as Michael took an unlocked bicycle from a bike rack in the 300 block of Hazel Avenue around 9 p.m. on July 11 when a witness intervened and confronted him. The man said he lived nearby, worked for a bicycle repair shop and wanted to repair the bike. The witness took the bike out of the suspect's vehicle and the man left.

ELUDING POLICE
An unidentified motorist refused to stop for officers who tried to pull them over around Lapier Street and Sheridan Road around 3:45 a.m. on July 12. The driver ran stop signs, stop lights and was going more than 35 mph over the speed limit, police reported.

  • Someone bought several Samsung Phones using the identity of a Grove Street resident and had them shipped to their home on July 12. The resident cancelled the order and did not have to pay anything.
  • A Woodlawn Avenue resident reported on July 13 that someone had their bank send a unemployment benefit debit card to their home. When the resident called the unemployment offices they learned their identity had been stolen.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Damien T. McClellan, 18, of the 5600 block of South Elizabeth Street, Chicago, and Nasean Anderson, 18, of the 6900 block of South Elizabeth Street, Chicago, were arrested around 5:30 p.m. on July 4 and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle in connection with the Jan. 21 theft of an unlocked Jeep from the 900 block of Sheridan Road. McClellan was also charged with fugitive from justice and driving with a suspended license.

Carlos Alvarez-Lopez, 45, of the 2700 block of Alan Court, Waukegan, was arrested on the morning of July 7 in connection with a Feb. 26 home burglary in the 200 block of Maple Road. He was charged with residential burglary and turned over the custody of the sheriff's office.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

SCAM WARNING
A Willow Hill Court resident reported on the evening of July 6 that they mistakenly called the wrong number for Microsoft customer service and were asked for bank account information. The resident did not provide any information but called police to their home so the incident could be documented.

UBER MISTAKE
Officers called to the area of Sunset Ridge and Old Farm roads for a report of a pair of women or girls walking around the front yards of several homes. Police spoke with the pair, who explained they had been trying to get to the Old Farm Road in Schaumburg but their Uber driver brought them to the wrong town.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Gayle I. Drapala, 53, of the 1800 block of Old Willow Road, Northfield, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. on July 7 following a traffic stop in the 200 block of Lagoon Drive and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. She was also cited with illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver and disobeying a stop sign.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A custodian at Harper School, 1101 Dartmouth Street, reported someone broke a window to a classroom sometime between 9:30 p.m. July 6 and 2 p.m. July 7.

NEW TRIER SCAM
A Central Avenue resident reported they gave money to a scammer purporting to be soliciting donations on behalf of athletic programs at New Trier High School. The resident made several donations between September 2018 and July 7 before school officials informed him that the caller was unaffiliated with New Trier.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole unspecified items from inside an unlocked car parked in the 600 block of Hibbard Road between July 2 and July 9.

BIKE THEFTS

  • A 20-to 25-year-old man in a surgical mask stole a bicycle from a yard in the 200 block of Catalpa Place shortly before 9:30 a.m. on July 6 and escaped before police arrived.
  • Around 2 p.m. on July 3, a parent reported her son's bike was stolen from Gillson Park after he left it there unlocked.
  • Someone stole an unlocked bicycle from a rack in the 100 block of Lake Avenue between 2:20 and 2:40 p.m. on July 9.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Jesus D. Barrera, 19, of the 400 block of Sherman Avenue, Evanston, was arrested on a bond forfeiture warrant connected to an earlier Wilmette charge after police were called to a home in the 2400 block of Wilmette Avenue around 6 a.m. on July 6.

Elmo Hatfield, 51, of the 8100 block of Knox Avenue, Skokie, was arrested around 7 a.m. on July 7 and charged with felony retail theft after police got a report of shoplifting from the Jewel-Osco at 1517 Sheridan Road. Witnesses were able to catch the license plate as the car fled, and officers pulled it over at Ridge Road and Central Avenue. The driver was cited with minor traffic offenses and released. Cook County prosecutors approved felony charges for Hatfield due to his extensive criminal history.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

GIFT CARD SCAM
An Oak Street resident reported on July 6 that they received an email that appeared to be from an Amazon employee instructing them to buy gift cards from Amazon, eBay and Google — purportedly in order to have charges reversed on the resident's credit card. The total amount of loss was unknown at the time of the report.

SHOPLIFTING
An employee at the Grand Food Center reported someone stole five bottles of liquor worth about $275 from the store.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • An officer discovered someone damaged a flower pot, graduation banner and some yard signs between 11:30 p.m. on July 6 and 2 a.m. on July 7. Someone also dislodged a parking sign at Burr Avenue and Chatfield Road during the same time period.
  • An employee at Sacred Heart School reported around 9 a.m. on July 7 that someone splattered teal paint on the school's sign, causing $1,500 in damage.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Sheridan Road resident reported that someone used their Nordstrom account to make an unknown amount of purchases and change their account information without authorization between July 3 and July 7.
  • A Chatfield Road resident reported that someone used their credit card to buy iPhones online and make other unauthorized purchases from Costco on July 7 for an unknown loss.
  • A Sheridan Road resident reported discovering on July 7 that someone had used their identity to open a Samsung account and buy two cell phones for a loss of more than $2,400.
  • A Sheridan Road resident reported on July 10 that someone used their identity to have an unauthorized debit card for unemployment benefits issued in their name.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Christian Michael LaChapelle, 43, of the 300 block of Green Bay Road, was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on July 10 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding. He was also issued citations for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, driving without lights when required, improper turn signal, improper lane usage, disobeying a stop sign, disobeying a traffic control light and failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle.
