“Maria believes that every student can reach higher levels of achievement than he or she may have thought before entering through North High’s doors,” says Superintendent Dr. Mark McDonald.
“She also knows that when staff members work collectively on behalf of students, more can be accomplished than if each one had worked alone. She is a true leader who deserves this recognition.”

“Maria has had a remarkable career when you look at the breadth of all she’s accomplished,” says Jim Roberts, co-director of the DuPage Region of the Illinois Principals Association and principal of Lake Park High School’s East Campus.
“One of the distinct characteristics of Maria is that she’s not only dedicated to student achievement and literacy, but she’s also deeply connected to the professional community.” Roberts also commends the extensive publications and presentations that Ward has contributed to the profession.
In addition to a ceremony with students, Ward will be honored at the District 99 Board of Education meeting on May 16, 2011 at 7 p.m. at South High School, located at 1436 Norfolk Ave. in Downers Grove.
