Students from South High School in Downers Grove Receive Medals at State FCCLA Competition

The state leadership and competition of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America was held April 7-9.

South High students took home four gold, three silver and one bronze medal at the state leadership conference and competition of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

The competition was held in Springfield from April 7 to 9.

  • Corey Cross – Bronze Medal, Cookie Decorating
  • Shannon Dawalibi - Gold Medal, Cookie Decorating 
  • Tracy Echert – Silver Medal, Cookie Decorating
  • Terry Gagala – Gold Medal, Relish Tray
  • Nadia Hernandez – Silver Medal, Cookie Decorating
  • Carly Lipuma – Gold Medal, Fashion Apparel Display – Named “Most Outstanding” in overall event
  • Chris Reusz – Gold Medal, Relish Tray
  • Jason Viacrusis – Silver Medal, Cookie Decorating

“The level of competition at state is intense, and we are so proud of the outstanding work by our students,” said South High School teacher and sponsor Cindy Farren in a district release.

“Students from across Illinois were represented at the competition.” South High teacher Katie Gonzalez also sponsors FCCLA.

According to the release, "FCCLA helps young men and women become better leaders in their families, careers and communities. Students learn skills for life including planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communication."
