State Troopers And U.S. Postal Worker Credited with Saving Man's Life

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indiana State Police credits the efforts of a United States Postal worker and two Indiana State Troopers for recently saving the life of an elderly Indianapolis man. ISP said U.S. Postal Carrier Glenn Bass was delivering mail on Sept. 20 when he came across something suspicious at an east side residence, and contacted Trooper Aryaun Smith who lives a few houses away. ISP said Bass told Trooper Smith an elderly man at the residence had not taken his mail out of his mailbox for several days, saying it was uncharacteristic for the man to leave his mail outside.

ISP said Trooper Smith went to the residence and noticed broken glass in one of the garage doors. She reportedly contacted Sergeant Josh Watson for assistance when she didn't hear a response from anyone inside the home. ISP said neither had luck seeing inside the home or making contact with any residents, and both decided to force their way into the home after learning from a neighbor that the man lived alone.

According to ISP, the two officials heard soft sounds of distress once inside the home, and found the elderly male laying in a back bedroom after apparently falling and severely injuring himself. Trooper Smith and Sgt. Watson called the Indianapolis Fire Department for medical help with taking the man to the hospital, as ISP reports the man was disoriented and barely conscious.

ISP reports both Trooper Smith and Sgt. Watson have been nominated by their supervisors for life saving awards due to the actions they took that day, stating in a release, "Had it not been for the diligent act of compassion and concern by Mr. Glenn as well as Trooper Smith and Sgt. Watson's excellent role as true servants in their community, this elderly man likely would not have been found until it was too late."
