MD Coronavirus: Elder Emergency, Neighbors Share, Restaurants

From a nursing home with 66 cases to neighbors sharing the Pledge of Allegiance, here are the week's updates on coronavirus across Maryland.

MARYLAND — Developments in the new coronavirus outbreak continue to unfold rapidly in Maryland, which is under a state of emergency with all public schools closed through April 24 as the number of cases has risen to 992 as of Saturday. Gov. Larry Hogan said Saturday that 66 residents at a Carroll County nursing home constitute a "rapidly evolving and escalating emergency." The number of deaths in the state linked to the virus reached 10 on Saturday night.

Nationwide, the coronavirus has caused more than 2,000 deaths as of Saturday night, according to the Associated Press. A total of more than 122,000 cases have been confirmed in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins researchers.

On Saturday, the Maryland Department of Health said the five most recent deaths were a result of the coronavirus, including a Prince George's County resident in his 50s; a Charles County resident in his 50s; a Wicomico County resident in her 60s with underlying medical conditions; a Baltimore City resident in her 60s with underlying medical conditions; and a Baltimore City resident in her 80s with underlying medical conditions.

Coronavirus Outbreak: 66 Test Positive At Mt. Airy Nursing Home

After 66 people at one nursing home in Carroll County tested positive for the new coronavirus, Gov. Larry Hogan declared the situation in the region a "rapidly evolving and escalating emergency." Of the residents who tested positive at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Mt. Airy for the virus, the governor said 11 are currently hospitalized.

Grocery stores across Maryland are setting aside special hours for shoppers who may be more vulnerable during the new coronavirus pandemic. In some cases, these at-risk customers will have an hour to shop without others in the store.
