War Of 1812 Event In Pasadena + Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration In Annapolis

A War of 1812 remembrance event is coming to Pasadena. Plus, a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is on tap at Sandy Point State Park.

MARYLAND — History buffs will enjoy a War of 1812 remembrance in Pasadena. A Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is also coming to Annapolis. Other upcoming events include mushroom hikes, Native American festivals and fall foliage fun.

Patch recently partnered with several local organizations to bring you their latest news. This guest contribution comes from National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways and Chesapeake Conservancy. Here's what Jody Hedeman Couser submitted to help you explore the Chesapeake Bay:

"Harvest Festival and War of 1812 Remembrance

There is definitely something for everyone at this fall celebration! For history buffs[,] there’s the War of 1812 period musket and cannon firing demos and the chance to learn about African Americans during the War of 1812. Or participate in building a scarecrow, making a corn husk doll, [shelling] and [grinding] corn from right off the stalk or [making] lavender sachets to take home. Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary will be presenting Scales and Tales for animal lovers and master gardeners will be doing a beekeeping demo. Fiber crafters will demo spinning tools and knitting, Viking knotted cord making, coiled rugs and more. Food will be available for purchase, including homemade desserts, and old time sea chanteys will provide music. $10 per family or $5 per person. "EcoMadres Celebration at Sandy Point State Park

Come find the EcoMadres and Corazón Latino table at the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Sandy Point State Park. EcoMadres will be sharing information about their current campaigns and ways you can get involved in programs focused on Latino communities. This family-friendly event will feature boat rides, Zumba classes, fishing demonstrations, food trucks and more. Oct. 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis, MD. More information.

"Mushroom Hikes

Hike with a naturalist through Patapsco Valley State Park to find and learn about mushrooms and talk about their role in the ecosystem. $5 per person or $10 per family. Three different dates/[locations] in the park: Oct. 6, McKeldin; Oct. 13, Hilton; Oct. 20, Avalon. All hikes will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will also be a mushroom cooking demonstration and tasting on Oct. 27. More information and registration"

"Indigenous Peoples Day at Irvine

Native American Indians have made, and continue to make, lasting contributions to our nation in every arena. Help celebrate their achievements and learn about just some of their history at this Irvine event. Families can learn about pre-colonial American Indian culture in the eastern region with hands-on activities and demos of traditional skills. Help with the harvest of the three sisters garden, grind corn, throw an atlatl, try your hand at starting a friction fire, make cordage and more. This program is intended for families with children 6+. $15 per person; a portion of that will be donated to the Baltimore American Indian Center. "Fall Foliage Reports and Events

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has a weekly fall foliage report that includes a color-coded map with four designations: changing, mid-point, peak and past peak. They also have a more detailed look at specific parks and specific trees, as well as suggestions for trips and fall events. You can check this week’s Maryland report and then sign up to be emailed a report every Thursday of the fall season. Foliage updates for Virginia are also available, with sign up for weekly updates and suggestions for fall getaways. Shenandoah National Park has its own live webcams. Visit Pennsylvania’s fall foliage headquarters for their regular foliage reports and more."
