Thousands of Maryland school employees not enrolled in FBI background-check database (foxbaltimore.com) — Thousands of school employees across Maryland, including about 5,400 in Baltimore City and many in nearby counties, are not enrolled in the FBI's RAP Back arrest-alert system. A FOX45 investigation highlights gaps in Baltimore County's data and shows how missing fingerprints delayed parent notification after an employee's arrest, raising urgent questions about how well local districts track staff arrests.
   

2. Baltimore City leaders pass bill to padlock smoke shops accused of illegal sales (foxbaltimore.com) — Baltimore City Council has approved a bill giving police more power to padlock smoke shops that repeatedly sell unlicensed cannabis or other illegal drugs, including to minors. Once signed by the mayor, businesses with two qualifying citations could face abatement orders and closure, while residents are urged to report suspected illegal sales or sales to juveniles by calling 911.
   

3. Early Research Partnerships Build Strong Bonds - UMBC: University Of Maryland, Baltimore County (umbc.edu) — A new UMBC summer research partnership is giving Baltimore City Community College students hands-on experience tackling issues rooted in Baltimore's history, from redlining to sustainable materials. One student spent the summer interviewing residents and photographing neighborhoods across the city to build community-driven maps, while another advanced bioplastics research, with both gaining mentors, stipends, and clearer paths toward four-year degrees and beyond.
   

4. 2 sentenced in 2025 murder of 18-year-old found near Anne Arundel trail (cbsnews.com) — A Baltimore teenager, Mekhi Andrew Duncan, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in the 2025 shooting death of 18-year-old Jonathan Benjamin Guiliani near the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail, while a co-defendant from Elkridge received 25 years. Investigators traced a stolen white Acura into Baltimore City and used DNA and cellphone records to link the suspects to the robbery attempt that turned deadly.
