Arson Suspect Sees Story In Media, Surrenders: Fire Marshal

Fire officials said a man turned himself in after allegedly trying to burn his house down in Harford County, then seeing he was wanted.

EDGEWOOD, MD — An Edgewood man who allegedly set fire to his own home Wednesday turned himself in to authorities on Thursday, fire officials say.

Shamir Dion Dowe, 28, surrendered at the Harford County Detention Center Thursday morning once he saw on Facebook and local TV news that he was wanted, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Authorities alleged Dowe set fire to his own home in the 1200 block of Windy Branch after a family dispute Wednesday morning. According to the fire marshal, Dowe lived there with four relatives.

Family members discovered the fire in the master bedroom at 8:01 a.m., and officials said they suspected Dowe had set the fire and fled the scene while his relatives were still inside the home.

Within five minutes, firefighters had brought the blaze under control at the split-foyer home.

On Wednesday afternoon, the fire marshal issued a lookout for Dowe, who was wanted in connection with first-degree arson.

He now faces 14 charges, court records show:

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • Two counts of attempted second-degree murder
  • First-degree arson
  • Second-degree arson
  • Malicious burning, first-degree
  • Malicious burning, second-degree
  • Two counts of first-degree assault
  • Two counts of second-degree assault
  • Two counts of reckless endangerment

According to court records, Dowe was being held without bail Thursday at the Harford County Detention Center.
