Started in 1996, the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival was the first major outdoor screening event in the United States. The event began on the grounds of the NIH Charities and remained there until the events of 9/11 eliminated public access to the grounds of NIH. The film festival then moved to several other locations and in 2013 found a home at the MCPS Board of Education lot. Now, thanks to Comcast and their sponsors, the magic days of yesteryear are back as the Comcast Outdoor Film Festival transports moviegoers to an icon of American social life, the drive-in theater.

A portion of the proceeds from the film festival goes to benefit NIH Children’s Charities. The sponsored charities include: The Children’s Inn, a private residence for pediatric patients at NIH and their families; Special Love which provides cancer families a network of support including retreats and outings known as Camp Fantastic; and Friends of the Clinical Center which provides emergency financial assistance to help patients and their families.
