Bystanders Chase Stabbing Suspect Down Street: Police

A Washington, D.C., man is charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing a man on a Wheaton street, police say.

Two bystanders helped chased down a District of Columbia man now charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a man in the neck on a Wheaton street.

Montgomery County Police have arrested Fredi Mazariegos, 26, of the District of Columbia, for the June 20 attempted murder of a 60-year-old man.

Police say the attack happened when the victim was standing next to his motorcycle in the 2300 block of Ennalls Avenue. He was putting on his helmet when he was allegedly stabbed once in the neck by Mazariegos, who fled the scene.

The first responding officers on the scene located the victim bleeding profusely from the neck and began life-saving measures to control the bleeding. Shortly after officers arrived on the scene, dispatchers received a call from a witness who was chasing Mazariegos on foot near Grandview Avenue.

A second witness called 9-1-1 to say he saw the suspect with a knife after the stabbing and was also chasing him.

Police found Mazariegos in the 11500 block of Grandview Avenue. Authorities say he appeared to have blood on his shoes and was arrested.

The stabbing victim was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, but police say he is expected to survive due to the first responding officers’ quick actions.

Mazariegos has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and first-degree assault. He is currently being held without bond.
