Schools Request State Waiver for Snow Days

Montgomery County Public Schools has applied for a waiver of up to three days from the Maryland State Department of Education.

Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers says making up the three snow days would cost the school system more than $1.72 million.

School leaders hope to hear a decision soon so the school system calendar can be finalized, said schools spokesman Dana Tofig.

“Cost is a motivating factor here,” Tofig told Montgomery Community Media.

Tofig said in a WTOP story that waivers “are not a given.”

So far, weather has forced the Montgomery school system to cancel classes seven times; the current plan to make up snow days is to extend the school year until June 17.
