UPDATE: Storm Topples Trees, Knocks Out Power

Emergency officials say the Bethesda and Gaithersburg areas were hit hardest by Thursday's storms. Check out photos.

UPDATED at 6:15 p.m.

At least 4,000 Montgomery County PEPCO utility customers were without power Friday after strong storms moved through the area, although that number had dropped to less than 50 by 6 p.m.

The utility company’s website showed outage reports scattered across the county, most west of Chevy Chase.

PEPCO said on Twitter that crews were working to restore power in the Chevy Chase-Bethesda area. Most power was restored in the early afternoon

Pete Piringer, public information officer for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, says the storms that blew through late Thursday caused significant tree damage, mainly in the Gaithersburg and Bethesda areas.

In the Colesville area Piringer said many trees are down and some houses are damaged. No injuries were reported there.

Reporter Hank Silverberg reported on Twitter that two cars were buried under massive trees that fell Friday morning on Walhounding Road in Bethesda.

Call 1-877-737-2662 to report a downed wire. Always assume downed wires are energized and avoid them, says PEPCO.
