Police verified media reports that a woman was a passenger in Rabain’s cruiser at the time of the accident. The woman, whose identity the department said will not be released, suffered minor injuries in the crash. She was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries and extreme emotional distress.
The woman has been sedated since Saturday morning and investigators haven’t been able to talk with her about the circumstances of the crash, according to the department.
Officer Rabain was off duty until he chose to take police action early Saturday morning, engaging his lights and sirens and attempting to conduct a traffic stop, the department says. Detectives are trying to learn more about the fleeing vehicle.
The police departmnt’s blogs says, “When we have definitive information about the vehicle, we’ll share that with our community.”
Police Chief Mark Magaw and his command staff were at the accident scene Saturday morning to salute the fallen officer as his body was taken from the crash site.
The department’s Twitter feed said: “We’re saddened to share one of our officers died in the line of duty today. Thank you for the outpouring of support.”
Rabain had been on the force for less than two years and leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter, Samiyah, the department says.
“He was a young officer. Loved this department, loved this county,” said Chief Magaw. “He was a fine officer.”
A memorial fund for Rabain’s family has been set up online on GoFundMe.com. As of Sunday afternoon, $10,000 had been donated.
