Weather Decision Made For Classes Tuesday: Howard County Public School System

A storm rolling into Maryland Tuesday has prompted Howard County Public School System officials to make a decision about classes.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — All Howard County public schools will close three hours early Tuesday due to forecasted inclement weather.

All aftercare programs in HCPSS schools, sponsored by the Columbia Association and the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, are canceled. All evening activities involving HCPSS students and staff are canceled. In addition, all community-sponsored programs in HCPSS buildings are canceled.

A strong storm will roll into Maryland Tuesday and has been forecast to dump more than 3 inches of rain falling in a six-hour period in the early evening. The downpours Tuesday evening will be blinding, with the potential for flash flooding, according to forecasts. Damaging 55 mph wind gusts also are in the forecast. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for parts of Maryland from 1 p.m. on Tuesday through 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

A coastal Maryland flood watch will be in effect through late Tuesday night. Residents should expect 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas in southern Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties due to tidal flooding, the NWS said.
