Seahawks Beat Broadneck in Baseball Playoffs at Home

South River team advances one game further in regional playoffs.

The second round of the Division 4A East regional baseball playoffs came to Edgewater on Monday afternoon when the Seahawks hosted the Broadneck Bruins. The Seahawks bagged their first playoff win this season, beating the Bruins 5-0.

South River (third seed) had a bye in the first round of the playoffs this year.  Broadneck (sixth seed) beat Annapolis (11th seed) 10-0 at home on Thursday for the chance to meet South River in Edgewater.

The win allows the Seahawks to move on to the regional semifinals against North Point (away). North Point beat Arundel on Monday's playoff game, 9-1.

Senior Scott Nickerson pitched for Broadneck, while sophomore Scott Mitchell threw for South River. Both pitchers were on the mound for all seven innings.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when South River's Scott Mitchell doubled, bringing Connor Cox home. Mitchell’s double was his tenth for the season, which tied Bobby Hite’s 2009 record. Hite now plays for Salisbury.

Mitchell’s strong pitching barely allowed Broadneck to get through their lineup of hitters. Each inning only allowed for three or four Bruins to make it to the plate.

In the fifth inning, another double by Mitchell brought Cox home again. That run broke Hite's record for doubles in a season.

The top of the sixth found the Seahawks really hitting their stride. Mitchell struck out the three Bruins hitters at the top of the inning.

When it was time for the Seahawks to hit, a single down the third base line by 11th grader Joe Scott at the top of the batting order set the stage for the next three at-bats.

Next, a fake bunt by sophomore Gabe Vertucci advanced Scott to third. When Craig Sheridan got to the plate, there were no outs and runners on third and first. Vertucci stole second and Sheridan singled to load the bases.

Kyle Canavan bunted, bringing two runners home—and bringing the score to 4-0 Seahawks with one out. Cox hit next. He was out at first, but brought the pinch runner for Sheridan home. The score was 5-0 at the end of the sixth inning.

The top of the seventh inning brought Seahawks Mitchell out for the final inning of the game. His stellar pitching continued, meeting three hitters for three outs at the top of the inning, ending the playoff hopes of Broadneck.
