Tour Pottery Studios in Edgewater, Lothian, Annapolis, Arnold and Odenton

Check out where local potters work. Their studios will be open to the public this weekend.

The Maryland Pottery Studio Tour is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop and visit the workshops and crafts of these ceramic artisans. There are two studios in Annapolis, two in south county and one in Odenton. The event is sponsored by the Potters Guild of Annapolis.

Dan and Lynda Ells built a custom, solar-designed, energy efficient home for their family in Lothian. But their eight grown children are off on their own now, so the home has been converted into a bed and breakfast. Lynda has a pottery studio where she creates one-of-a-kind stoneware pieces that include bowls, mugs, vases, pitchers, planters and canisters.

Renata Mastroti Pottery

Mastroti studied ceramics in Brazil and took a two-year apprenticeship with Anne Schliffer at the Rochester Folk Art Guild. In 2002, she moved to Maryland and worked as a production potter for two years at Annapolis Pottery in downtown Annapolis. She has been producing from her Edgewater studio since 2004. She creates items that are displayed and sold in galleries and stores in the United States and Brazil.

Homewood Pottery

John Jensen and Jonnie S. Friedman make pottery, scultpure, paintings, murals and more out of their Annapolis home. Jensen has been working as an artist for 40 years. His talents include painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and pottery. He also teaches pottery at St. John's College in Annapolis. Those classes are open to both students and the general public.

Friedman also works in their Annapolis studio as a potter. She is the art teacher at Chesapeake Academy in Arnold.

Pottery Studio of Jayne Shatz
452 Laurel Valley Court, Arnold, 410-757-6351

Shatz offers private sessions, classes and workshops year round. But she also uses her own studio to create pottery, including vases, bowls and cups in ceramics, porcelain and stoneware. She also does more artsy pieces, like wall hangings and sculptures.

Down to the Potter’s House Studio
497 Lisa Avenue, Odenton, 443-306-1221

Campbell shares her studio with her family, throwing in a corner of the basement she's dubbed the “wheel room” and doing glazing and handbuilding in the potter’s shed out back. Campbell has functional stoneware, artistic pieces including bowls painted with mandala designs, and sculpture.

Rachel Campbell has invited guest artist Kim Tyssowski, who is a member of the Baltimore and Annapolis Potters Guilds. Tyssowski has been a potter for 25 years and has explored in handbuilding, sculpture, raku, clay monoprints and mosaics.
