Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Registrations for Winter Underway Now

Early sign-up discount is available if you register by Tuesday or Thursday at their open registration event.

Upward Sports, a nationwide Christian sports league for children, is now accepting registrations at First Baptist Church in Edgewater. The league, with half a million children participating in grades kindergarten through seven, strives to create positive experiences through healthy competition.

Registration dates for basketball and cheerleading are Oct. 11 and 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at 38 W. Central Ave. in Edgewater.

The league is open to both boys and girls.

According to Upward parent Carole Purves, the league teaches fundamentas and a unique drafting system creates balanced teams. In addition, Purves said that a “unique substitution system produces equal playing time for the players.”

Purves said that cheerleading features positive cheers, chants and pom routines.

The cost to join the league is $65 per child for either sport, with a deadline of Dec. 9. The cost goes up to $80 after Thursday’s open registration  at the church closes. It jumps to $90 to join after Dec. 2.

Optional basketball shorts and cheerleading mock turtlenecks are $15 each.

All practices and games take place at the First Baptist gymnasium. Practices and games are each one hour long. Practices begin the week after Thanksgiving and games begin after the new year on Jan. 7. The league wraps up play at the end of February.
