Local first responders, including the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, rescued a third victim who survived. Prosecutors and the judge emphasized the lasting trauma to families and the community from this preventable DUI tragedy.
   

2. State Transportation Plan Funds MD 5, Local Buses, Bikeway (southernmarylandchronicle.com) — La Plata residents can expect a new phase of the town bikeway along Radio Station Road and a major safety upgrade on MD 6/Charles Street between US 301 and Willow Lane. The state's six-year transportation plan also funds local bus replacements and maintenance that support everyday commuting. These projects aim to improve safety, connectivity to schools and parks, and overall mobility in and around town.

About 100 donated children's titles will launch the space, with library supporters helping replenish it so young visitors under 7 always have stories to enjoy and take home.

Southern Maryland Rapid Transit, road safety projects remain a priority (somdnews.com) — State transportation officials say a safety project from Crain Highway to Willow Lane in La Plata is finishing design now, with construction expected to start next spring to improve pedestrian access. At the same meeting, leaders reaffirmed support for Southern Maryland Rapid Transit and discussed crash fatalities, crosswalk upgrades, restriping, and litter concerns affecting drivers across Charles County.
   

5. New Magazine Spotlights Thomas Stone, 1926 La Plata Tornado (southernmarylandchronicle.com) — La Plata's devastating 1926 tornado is a centerpiece of Charles County's latest Preservation Matters magazine, marking the storm's 100th anniversary and remembering the children lost at La Plata Elementary. The free online issue also highlights Thomas Stone, Port Tobacco archaeology, preservation award winners, and shoreline restoration, and residents can request a printed copy directly from the county.
