Officer Amy Caprio Plaque Dedicated 'To Her Legacy,' Police Say
An event Oct. 5 designed to honor Officer Amy Caprio is about her legacy of love for public safety, community, animals and more.

PERRY HALL, MD — A ceremony planned for Saturday at Perry Paw Dog Park centers around a plaque erected in honor of Officer Amy Caprio by the Baltimore County Department of Parks and Recreation. But the event is about more than the plaque, according to organizers.
"The dedication is to her legacy," Sgt. Ernest J. Hannig told Patch. He is part of a team that is a liaison with the family and the Baltimore County Police Department, which helped organize the event in collaboration with the parks department.
It is billed as the Officer Amy Caprio Plaque Dedication and Family Fun Public Safety Day, from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, near Perry Paw Dog Park in Honeygo Run Regional Park.

The Baltimore County Police Department and Baltimore County Fire Department will be in attendance, as will the Humane Society of Harford County, at the dedication.
People can adopt a dog or find out about becoming a police officer or firefighter at the event, according to Hannig. There will be fingerprinting and displays including the police helicopter and marine unit. The Towson University mascot plans to make an appearance; Caprio graduated in the class of 2010.

When people think about Caprio, he said they remember "her love for animals, sports, public safety, community service." The idea was "to capture those really great qualities about Amy," Hannig said. "Her family was saying she would have loved to have seen this. It's a very nice way to honor all of her."
Organizers said that the idea is to celebrate the wonderful life lived by Caprio.
"It's another way to honor her and bring the community together," Hannig said. "Obviously Perry Hall went through quite the incident," he said of her death, which occurred after she was investigating suspicious activity at a neighborhood in the community. The idea of the dedication in Perry Hall is "to celebrate Amy and her legacy moreso than mourn," Hannig said.
The Officer Amy Caprio Plaque Dedication and Family Fun Public Safety Day, held from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Perry Paw Dog Park, 9033 Honeygo Boulevard, Perry Hall, MD 21128. One lane in the northbound direction on Honeygo Boulevard may be shut down around noon for the event, and overflow traffic may spill over from the park onto Honeygo, according to police.
