PERRY HALL, MD — It has been two years since Officer Amy Caprio was killed investigating a suspicious circumstance in Perry Hall, but she continues to maintain a presence in the community she worked to protect. The dog park at Honeygo Run Regional Park is named in her honor, and a playground is being updated at Gunpowder Elementary to memorialize her.

Baltimore County police officers wore mourning bands Thursday to memorialize Caprio, who was the first female officer to die in the line of duty in the department's history.

Caprio was killed by a teen involved in home burglaries who ran her over on Linwen Way May 21, 2018. Four teens have been sentenced for her murder; the driver was given life with the possibility of parole, and his three accomplices are serving life sentences with all but 30 years suspended.

Caprio, 29, transferred to Parkville from the Essex precinct eight months before her death. She was commended for her work ethic and was known for her love of helping others — people as well as their pets. Police said she excelled at maintaining a visible presence in the communities she covered while balancing the patrol and investigative components of the job.

Her husband, Tim Caprio, started "Amy's Ride And Run" to celebrate her life and the activities she loved. The event in Kingsville has taken place the past two years around the time of her May 27 birthday but this year organizers say they are coming up with an abbreviated version of the event in the near future due to the coronavirus pandemic.
