Cat Killed, Woman Suffers Burn Injuries After MoCo Apartment Fire (patch.com) — Residents near Blair Plaza in Silver Spring saw a late-night apartment fire that left one woman hospitalized with non-life-threatening burns and killed one of her two cats. Investigators say a candle in a closet sparked the blaze on the eighth floor, damaging nearby units with fire and water and displacing the woman and surviving cat as about 70 firefighters responded.
   

2. Bike route construction to restrict traffic on 16th Street in Montgomery Co. for 9 months (wtop.com) — If you drive through Silver Spring on 16th Street, expect single-lane closures and heavier traffic for about nine months as a new protected bike and pedestrian route is built between Spring Street and 2nd Avenue. Work will occur mainly on weekdays during off-peak hours and will eventually connect to Metro stations and other bike facilities, with completion targeted for late 2027 or early 2028.

Montgomery County Ravens Fan Wins $50,000 (mocoshow.com) — A Silver Spring resident just scored a $50,000 win on a Maryland Lottery Ravens scratch-off ticket, turning a routine grocery-store purchase into a major payday. The longtime Ravens fan, who works at a local grocery store, plans to surprise his wife with the news after claiming his prize in Baltimore.
   

4. 4 Things You Should Never Buy At A Yard Sale, Even If They're Really Cheap (southernliving.com) — Silver Spring resident and thrifting blogger Serena Appiah urges local yard-sale fans to skip "good deal" impulse buys and only grab items they've truly been seeking and will use right away. Along with other experts, she also warns against project pieces, questionable bathroom items, and damaged or unstable furniture that can quickly become clutter or headaches.
   

5. David Germakian Joins MCB Real Estate as Senior Managing Director, Retail Development (citybiz.co) — A massive $2.7 billion VIVA White Oak mixed-use project in Silver Spring is highlighted as one of MCB Real Estate's key developments as the firm hires veteran developer David Germakian to lead retail development nationwide. While his role is national, his experience with Montgomery County projects suggests continued focus on shaping large, community-oriented retail and mixed-use centers like those planned locally.
