Cold Weather Shelter Opens In Carroll County

As Carroll County Public Schools and other agencies closed Thursday due to inclement weather, one place opened its doors.

CARROLL COUNTY, MD — Carroll County opened its cold weather shelter at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. Each year, the shelter opens from Nov. 15 to April 1 for those who need someplace to get a hot meal, shower, laundry and warm place to sleep.

The shelter is staffed mainly by volunteers and is open from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. each night.

While the shelter opened, multiple other places were closing on Nov. 15 due to inclement weather.

Closures

  • Carroll County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 15. Officials made the announcement Thursday morning. Employees should follow the "code yellow" protocol, according to Carroll County Public Schools. In addition to Carroll County, school systems in Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties are also closed on Thursday, Nov. 15. Cecil County is on a two-hour delay.
  • McDaniel College will also be closed. All classes and events have been canceled, including “Books Sandwiched In,” Africa’s Legacy Global Dinner and Thursday's performance “Spring Awakening."
  • Carroll County Government offices will close at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. Carroll County Senior Centers will also be closing early for the winter storm. The Resource Recovery Park (Northern Landfill) and Carroll Transit will also close at 1 p.m.
  • All branches of the Carroll County Public Library closed early due to the weather.

The snow emergency plan is in effect in Carroll County, according to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, meaning people cannot park on designated snow emergency routes.
