On this day in 1873: The Boston Belfry Murderer kills his first victim. For those of you who might not remember this from history class: A woman was found beaten and strangled to death in Dorchester. The following year another woman was killed and likewise until 1876. The man who was dubbed “The Boston Belfry Murderer” was Thomas Piper, the sexton at the Warren Avenue Baptist Church. He ended up confessing to the four killings. He was arrested, convicted and sentenced to die. Piper was hanged in 1876.
