Scottish music in Sudbury on July 15
Fiddle champion Ryan McKasson and guitarist Eric McDonald perform at Nunes Barn

When violinist Ryan McKasson won the National Scottish Fiddle Championship in 1996, he was the youngest person ever to receive that honor. Twenty years later, his playing is still virtuosic, but more masterful and expressive than ever. A few years ago the Seattle fiddler joined up with locally based guitarist/mandolinist Eric McDonald to form a dynamic Scottish music duo that seeks to honor the music’s roots while breaking new ground. The two will perform on Friday, July 15, 7 p.m. at Nunes Barn, 125 Powers Rd., Sudbury. All are invited, and a donation of $20 is suggested. Reservations are recommended by e-mailing themilva@hotmail.com or calling 781-648-5579.
Masters of tradition, McKasson and McDonald purposefully explore the dark corners floating on the music’s edges, embracing an approach that enhances each player’s individual artistry. The result is alluringly complex, full of spontaneous musicality and swirling intensity. Whether it’s a rousing dance number, a plaintive air, or an original piece, McKasson and McDonald deliver it with energy and sensitivity. Complementing the varied instrumental numbers are traditional ballads sung by McDonald. Devon Leger of Hearth Music says, “This duo really shows how two masterful musicians listen and play off each other." Despite both living active musical lives thousands of miles apart these two musicians have committed to working together to forge a new musical path.
