People think of Boston as a very traditional city, but from the 1930s through the early 1970s it was a hotbed of Modernism, and all the great leaders in modern architecture - Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, among others - did work in New England. Massachusetts is home to some of the most significant modern house neighborhoods in this country, of which Snake Hill in Belmont is one of the earliest and most significant. As part of Arlington Community Education's Tuesday Night Conversations series, architect and preservation activist David Fixler will discuss the importance of New England within the context of international Modernism and the work of DOCOMOMO, an international organization now at the forefront of the movement to preserve modern architecture.
