Arlington Schools May Have to Pay Retirees $98k for Unused Sick Time: Report
The issue goes back to contracts written years before that did not cap how much employees could be paid back for unused sick time.
Arlington, MA -- The Arlington Public School system will be responsible for paying back $98,000 in unused sick time after three employees retired, according to Wicked Local Arlington.
The contracts of the employees were drafted years before, without capping how much money an employee would be paid back for things like unused sick days. This is connected to the lack of short-term disability coverage, as employees accrue sick time in the event they might need surgery, or something of that nature, which would prevent them from working for days, or even weeks.
According to Wicked Local Arlington, Diane Johnson, the system's Chief Financial Officer, said are still a few contracts that were grandfathered into the system and are uncapped.
