Woman Charged at Arlington Officers With Large Knife: Police

Officers were able to safely disarm the woman and she was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

ARLINGTON, MA - Arlington Police are being credited with preventing a potential “suicide by cop” situation after a woman reportedly charged at officers with a large knife during a well-being check.

According to police, officers responded to an address on Grove Street around 11:15 a.m. Saturday to check on a resident at the request of the resident’s father.

When officers arrived, they found a 32-year-old woman who had barricaded herself inside the apartment, police said. The woman was shouting remarks indicating that she planned on killing herself. Officers forced their way into the apartment when the woman charged at the officers violently swinging a large knife, police said.

At that time, Officer Michael Hogen deployed his less-lethal beanbag round, which struck the woman and disarmed her, police said. Officers secured the resident, and she was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

“Our officers responded to a call and immediately found themselves in a dangerous situation, facing an armed subject who was clearly distraught,” Chief Ryan said in a statement. “Thankfully, the officers, including Officer Hogan, fell back on their training and were able to resolve this situation without the loss of life and without serious injury to either the subject or the responding officers.”
