WELLFLEET, MA — Police are investigating three instances of fake wooden legs being left at a memorial to Arthur Medici in Wellfleet. Medici, a 26-year-old Revere man, died in September after he was bitten by a shark while boogie boarding off Newcomb Hollow Beach. It was the state's first fatal shark attack since 1936.

Fake legs were found at a memorial stone dedicated to Medici in March, June and this past Saturday, according to police.

Public works removed the first leg and threw it out, Boston.com reported. The second was attached to a fence and had a pair of torn jeans and a note reading "RIP," according to the Cape Cod Times.

The third appeared to be painted to look like a bloody gash. It was attached to a cooler filled with what was believed to be cement, the Times reported.

So far police have no suspects, nor are they entirely sure it's a crime. A Wellfleet police lieutenant told Boston.com no vandalism was involved.
