📰 News we're reading

• Fair Cash Value at the Heart of Tax Dispute With Country Club (belmontvoice.org) — Belmont's tax battle with Belmont Country Club has ended with a state board ordering roughly $337,000 in property tax refunds, on top of the club's existing 75% recreational land break. Local officials worry the decision strains Belmont's already tight budget and could influence assessments through 2025, even as the club remains a longtime practice site for Belmont High's golf team.

• Ryan, Solet Tout Records in Middlesex DA Forum (belmontvoice.org) — Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, a longtime Belmont resident, and challenger David Solet are clashing over leadership, violent crime, and impaired driving as they head toward the Sept. 1 Democratic primary. In a recent forum, they also debated mental health resources, cooperation with ICE, and new technologies like Shotspotter and AI scam protections that could affect justice and safety in Belmont and across the county.

• Paul C. Lakschewitz (wiscassetnewspaper.com) — Belmont-raised Paul C. Lakschewitz, a St. Luke's School graduate who built a long Hilton Hotels career in Los Angeles, has died at 82. He is remembered fondly for summers in Southport, Maine, his generous "Uncle Paul" hospitality, and close ties to Belmont relatives who continue to live and raise families in town and nearby communities.
