Boston Calling 2019: Day 3 Hidden Gems

Travis Scott and Logic closed Boston Calling with massive hip hop performances. But they weren't the only ones drawing crowds.

BOSTON — With Travis Scott and Logic headlining the last night of Boston Calling, high profile hip hop dominated much of the night. Still there were plenty of other acts that brought a lot of great music to the table Sunday.

Check out some of those hidden gems that left a lasting impression on Day 3 of Boston Calling 2019:

Chromeo

It might be tough to have the band closing the arena stage be considered a hidden gem. But when the festival schedules its performance at the same time as Travis Scott, I think it's safe to say not everyone saw the Montreal electro-funk duo's set. Chromeo usually play as a two-piece live band, but instead did a DJ set. But given that their tunes are already pretty dance-driven it translated really well, and the few who saw Chromeo seemed to think so too, especially when the band dropped its popular song "Come Alive." I highly recommend catching Chromeo the next time they come around, especially if you are into electronic music, funk, or disco.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise

Rainbow Kitten Surprise's laid back, indie rock vibe was the perfect afternoon compliment to an otherwise very energetic and hip hop heavy night. Several members of the 5-piece band contributed their talented vocals, which wouldn't sound that far off at a Modest Mouse concert. Their crowd was huge, so don't be surprised if you start hearing more from this band in the next couple years.

Snail Mail

Like Sidney Gish, on Day 2, Snail Mail also needed nothing more than a guitar to engage her fans. Her set was impressive, especially as her laid back guitar work layered perfectly with her soft and beautiful singing voice. Fans seemed to think so too, showing up early to sing along songs like "Heat Wave" and "Full Control." She even performed a couple unreleased songs, which the crowd responded to with plenty of applause.
