State Senator Brian Joyce Won't Run for Reelection

The state senator has announced that he will not seek reelection this fall.

After 20 years as a state senator, Brian Joyce will not run for re-election.

The Milton Democrat announced through a statement Tuesday that he will not seek another term in the Massachusetts Senate this November.

“I have worked hard for Milton and achieved results, while always trying to abide by the rules. I will continue to work hard for Milton and all of the district but will not seek re-election,” the state senator said in a statement to the Milton Times. “On a personal note, Mary and I are very touched by the many kind gestures of support and love from our neighbors and friends.”

The past year for Joyce has been one full of controversy. Last week, the FBI and IRS raided Joyce’s Canton law office. The FBI said the action was “court authorized activity in connection with an ongoing federal investigation.”

Last month, Joyce paid $5,000 under an agreement made public by the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance for using campaign funds to pay for his son’s graduation party.

Also, Joyce was also questioned for free drying cleaning he received from a business in his district.

Last year, he stepped down from his leadership position as the assistant majority leader after meeting with state insurance regulators on behalf of a private client.

While the state Republican Party called on Joyce to resign, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and Governor Charlie Baker took a wait and see approach, separately telling reporters they wanted to see the process play out.

If Joyce chose to run for reelection, a primary showdown with State Representative Walter F. Timilty was likely. Secretary of State spokesman Brian McNiff told the Boston Globe Tuesday that Timilty pulled papers to run.

Joyce represents the Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth district, which includes Avon, Braintree, Canton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Milton, Randolph, Sharon, Stoughton and West Bridgewater.
