Shadow Theater Innovations at Puppet Showplace

Interested in puppetry, lighting, or visual design? Get ready for Shadow Theater Innovations: A hands-on adult class on shadow puppetry!

This workshop is a hands-on exploration of the materials and methods used in contemporary shadow puppetry. Participants will experience how varied lighting sources and projection surfaces transform shadow theater’s visual vocabulary and storytelling possibilities. The class will experiment with fixed and hand held halogen lights, LED lights, overhead projectors, moving screens, layered screens, and life-size/full body shadow puppets. We will discover how to move from simple silhouettes to the more complex magic of movie-like image collages, giant shadows, shadows within shadows, cross-fades, white-light “inverse” shadows, and dynamic special effects. There will be an emphasis on affordable technologies and practical techniques that can be readily applied to participants’ future projects. The class fee includes admission to a Friday evening puppetry performance where many of these advanced shadow techniques will be on display.

This is an intermediate-level class. Some experience with puppetry, lighting, or visual design is recommended. Please e-mail artistic@puppetshowplace.org with questions about class content.

Mon-Fri July 20th-24th 6:30pm-8:30pm.

Class Size: 12. Recommended for ages 16 and up.
