Man Facing Charges After Stolen Vehicle Crashes Through Cambridge Building

The identity of the person arrested was released on Tuesday.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — The police department announced the identity of the person arrested in connection with a motor vehicle crash into a building that left one person seriously injured.

David Powell, 57, of Roslindale, was arrested and arraigned on the charges of leaving the scene of a crash with personal injury, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and receiving a stolen motor vehicle related to the incident that took place on Waverly Street Monday afternoon.

Cambridge police were notified of a Porsche that had been reported stolen out of Boston and reportedly heading in the direction of Cambridge on Massachusetts Avenue. The vehicle drove away at a high speed in an attempt to evade police when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Police did not directly pursue the car for safety reasons.

Shortly after, emergency dispatchers received a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a biotechnology building near MIT, injuring one person inside. Cambridge firefighters transported the person to the hospital. The car also hit a tree, a bike rack and water pipe. Police soon identified the vehicle as the stolen one from the previous incident. Powell reportedly fled the scene on foot immediately after crashing the vehicle, but was soon apprehended.

In addition to Cambridge police, the incident remains under investigation by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police.
