A School, Library and Town Hall Now Reunited
Fully Refurbished "Little Red Schoolhouse" Is Most Recent 'Little Free Library' to Undergo Renovation, Returns to Dedham's New Town Hall
DEDHAM, MA - Visitors to Dedham’s new Town Hall at 450 Washington Street are welcoming the return of its Dedham Little Free Library, which had been missing from its post recently while the Dedham Library Innovation Team (D-LIT) refurbished the structure. This little lending library, installed at the site of the original Town Hall, was actually the very first of the dozen little libraries that began appearing around town in 2014. D-LIT once again commissioned artist and Dedham resident Sal D’Antona to repaint this library, as well as replace the rusting latch and hinges with new and improved naval brass hardware.
D’Antona was ably assisted once again by his daughter Ava who helped repaint the library, which is designed to resemble a little red school. To prevent water seepage from the top of the roof seam, D’Antona’s father-in-law Skip Cummins, a resident of Dedham’s Manor neighborhood and a retired sheet metal worker, fabricated and installed a copper cap for the library.
The restoration of the dozen little libraries across town is being overseen by Dedham Library Innovation Team’s (D-LIT) Dedham Little Free Library Restoration Project, and has been supported by individual contributions from the community, as well as financial support from Dedham Cultural Council and Dedham Savings.
