Bomb Squad Conducts Controlled Explosion In Falmouth

A naval flare was found by a family on a Falmouth beach, police said Friday.

FALMOUTH, MA — A naval flare detonated in Falmouth Friday after a family stumbled across it on a town beach, authorities said. The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad conducted the controlled explosion Friday afternoon. No one was hurt.

Police said it was immediately unclear if the flare was live. The decision to detonate was made "due to the potential dangerous nature of the device," police said. The controlled explosion was conducted at the Town Leaf dump off Blacksmith Shop Road.
