Framingham Teachers Association To Host Forum On School Funding
The forum will be on March 11 and focus on the Cherish Act and Promise Act.
FRAMINGHAM, MA- The Framingham Teacher's Association is hosting a forum from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on March 11 about funding in public schools.
The 2015 Foundation Budget Review Commission found that the Commonwealth’s public school funding formula is outdated — and that the foundation budget is too low by more than $1 billion. The forum will be focused on two bills that help fund public school education. The Promise Act focuses on PreK-12 education and would, over a period of time, implement the four core recommendations of the commission to increase the foundation budget, resulting in more than $1 billion in new state funding. The bulk of those funds would go to districts with the greatest need and fewest resources.
The Cherish Act is focused on public higher education. It would implement the recommendations of the 2014 Higher Education Finance Commission, resulting in more than $500 million in additional funding for public higher education, establish, in statute, a fair and adequate minimum funding level for public higher education at no less than the FY01 per-student funding level, adjusted for inflation, and freeze tuition and fees for five years.
