Whitney Wharf Bridge Project Takes Step Forward

A contract has been awarded for the construction of the bridge.

After a long process of receiving approvals from the state and on the local level, Hingham is ready to go ahead with the construction of the Whitney Wharf pedestrian bridge.

During a special selectmen meeting Thursday night, the board voted 2-0 to enter into a contract worth $245,530 with York Bridge Concepts for the bridge. Selectman Mary Power was not in attendance for the vote.

“We’re very supportive of that and we’re hoping sooner than later we’ll have the bridge. I know people have been talking about it and looking forward to it,” Selectman Paul Gannon said.

Part of a plan to make the area more pedestrian friendly, the bridge will start at Redeye Roasters on Otis Street and end at the wharf.

HDC member and Bathing Beach Trustees Chairman Alan Perrault said York Bridge Concepts did the World’s End Bridge, noting that this is their niche.

Northern Construction of Weymouth was the other company to bid on the project, putting forth a base bid of $490,000.

Pending poor weather, the bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
