About KM Sewing

PLEASE NOTE: KM Sewing is based in a live/work space in a residential neighborhood. ALL WORK IS DONE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. ABSOLUTELY NO DROP-IN SERVICE. Exact address will be sent with appointment confirmation.

KM Sewing is a local, independent, woman-owned business specializing in sewing machine repair and private sewing lessons. Service calls are available for customers with industrial machines. Loaner machines are available. KM Sewing does NOT service any brand of computerized sewing machines.

Owner Karen Martakos has been making costumes and clothing for theater, opera, dance, film, musical acts (including The Rolling Stones), and private clients for over 25 years. She was on staff in the Boston Ballet costume shop for 9 years, and managed the costume shop at Boston University for 7 years.

Throughout her sewing career, Karen has been the go-to person in many of the shops that she worked in when a sewing machine was acting up. She took this love of trouble-shooting machines to the next level in 2017, when she travelled to Missouri to study sewing machine repair with master mechanic Ray White. KM Sewing specializes in restoring vintage machines and servicing industrial machines, but also services most brands of non-computerized machines. Many of Karen's former colleagues and employers are now regular repair clients, including The Huntington Theater Company, Emerson College, Brandeis University, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and The Brooks School.
