New Pizza, Ice Cream Spot Off To A Strong Start In Marlborough
The restaurant on Main Street is known for its sourdough pizza and house-made ice cream.

MARLBOROUGH, MA — A longtime pizza spot in Boston’s South End opened a second location in Marlborough last summer and has had a successful first few months.
Picco, a restaurant that's served pizza on Tremont Street in Boston for more than 20 years, opened a location at 179 Main St. in July. Picco, an acronym for Pizza and Ice Cream Company, is known for its sourdough pizza and flavorful, house-made ice cream with locally sourced ingredients.
“It’s been going really well since we’ve opened,” assistant general manager Kelly Urquhart told Patch. “There’s a lot of restaurants in Marlborough, but I think Picco brings in something really different and interesting.”

Picco's first location opened at 513 Tremont St and grew into one of the city’s more popular eateries. Urquhart, who worked at the Boston location for six years, said that everything at both restaurants tastes exactly the same.
“All the recipes are sort of staples that we’ve had for a long time,” said Urquhart. “Everything in Marlborough tastes exactly like everything in Boston.”

Picco, whose owners live in the city, serves Italian favorite dishes, like spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parm, pizzas, and calzones, as well as wine, beer and cocktails. The business also offers a number of flavors of its homemade ice cream to be eaten with an assortment of toppings.
Urquhart said the strawberry ice cream, made with local fruit, and mint ice cream with homemade dark chocolate chips are some of the highlights on the menu.
The restaurant is located in an old bank building built in 1924. “It’s got these really awesome high cathedral ceilings with really ornate sort of art deco vibes to it. The building itself has a lot of character," Urquhart told Patch.

She said the most challenging part of opening was the initial renovation. The business, which the owners wanted to open in February, didn’t end up opening until July.
Urquhart told Patch that the staff works hard to make sure its customers are well-attended to.
“One of the things that Picco really focuses on is just excellent service on top of our really high-quality food,” Urquhart told Patch. “We want everyone that comes in here to be well taken care of.”

While Picco could see expansion in the coming years, the business plans to dig its feet a bit deeper in Marlborough before expanding, according to Urquhart.
