There was a 6.5-mile backup to Bourne Bridge and a 2-mile backup to the Sagamore Bridge as of 4:30 p.m.—and it’s only going to get worse as the afternoon rolls on.

Traffic congestion this Fourth of July weekend is expected to be the heaviest in eight years, fueled by low gas prices. Gas is averaging about $2.75 a gallon statewide—the lowest in five years for the Fourth of July weekend.
