Obituary: Frederick Mangone Jr., Chief of Medford Special Police

Frederick L. Mangone Jr., a lifelong resident of Medford and chief of the Medford Special Police, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Feb. 19. He was the beloved husband of Elaine M. (Babin) Mangone and together they shared 55 years of marriage. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Frederick L. and Theresa (Perna) Mangone.

Fred was a lifelong Medford Resident and was a graduate of Medford High School. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and honorably served aboard the USCGC Bibb (WPG-31) a 327-foot Secretary Class Coast Guard ship. Following his service in the Coast Guard, Fred began working in the heating and cooling field. He became the owner and operator of the Abbott Refrigeration Company of Medford for over 45 years.

Fred was also appointed to the Medford Special Police in 1956 and steadily rose through the ranks eventually becoming chief and has faithfully served the City of Medford for many years. He also served as a constable for the City of Medford and was a director of Medford's Civil Defense and Emergency Management Board. In his leisure time, he enjoyed aviation and was a licensed private pilot. He further enjoyed motorcycling with his son and together they were active for a time with the Blue Knights.

In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by his children: Paul Mangone of Tewksbury and Sharon Kulas and her husband Bob of Merrimack, N.H. He was the loving grandfather of Kristi, Aimee and Jason Cozza. Brother of Barbara Matthias of Medford.

Funeral services will be held from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD, Monday, Feb. 24, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 441 Fellsway West, Medford, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Services will conclude with military honors and burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Fred's memory to the National Kidney Foundation, 85 Astor Ave., Suite 2, Norwood, MA 02062.
