Great Escape: Castle Island Castaways

An Urban Island Paradise for All.

My family and I recently enjoyed visiting with some friends in New Jersey, and spent a day roaming around New York City before returning home to Medford. While in NYC, we enjoyed exploring a bit of Central Park, which reminded me of one of my favorite local destinations – Castle Island.

When I mention Castle Island to friends here at home, I usually get one of two reactions: (1) “I love that place!” or (2) “I’ve never been there.” Basically, everyone I know who’s been, loves it! My family included.

The 22-acre urban park includes both beautiful views and public amenities such as public restrooms, first aid and lifeguard functions, and a great many options for recreation. The island is connected to the mainland by both pedestrian and vehicular causeways, making it easy to get to. (Take the JFK exit off 93 South, and then follow William J. Day Boulevard to the end and you’re there.)

The “castle” at Castle Island is actually Fort Independence, a pentagonal fort built in the early 1800s. It is the 8th fort to call the island home, built to defend Boston from attack by sea. Tours of the fort are FREE, and will begin Memorial Day weekend.

This spring or summer, why not check it out – or plan to go again! Castle Island is a great destination for couples and families alike, where you can enjoy a little local history, scenic views, the beach (Carson Beach), a playground, delicious fried clams or yummy ice cream from Sullivan’s, and so much more… there’s something for everyone.
