Increase In IRS Phone Scams In Medford: Officials

Officials are warning Medford residents about a phone scam amid an uptick in reports.

MEDFORD, MA – City officials are warning Medford residents of an increase in reported IRS telephone scams. According to a press release on the city's website, residents have been receiving calls from people posing as IRS agents and requesting money owed. The caller will sometimes threaten arrest or an audit, officials said.

To avoid further trouble, the resident is told to transfer money to a Green Dot Money Pak or other similar card and then provide the number on the back of the card to the caller.

Residents should remember that the IRS does not place these types of calls requesting money in this fashion. The agency will also never ask for a person's Social Security number over the phone.
