Medford Awarded Nearly $7K In Fire Safety Funding

Grant money will be used to improve fire safety education for children in Medford.

MEDFORD, MA –The fire department was awarded nearly $7,000 in grant money for fire safety education for children.

The grant was part of the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior S.A.F.E. programs. The Baker-Polito Administration awarded grants to 246 fire departments throughout the state.

The Medford Fire Department received $6,754 under the S.A.F.E. grant. That money will be used to work with classroom teachers to deliver fire and life safety lessons.

"The program is a great example of state and local governments collaborating with teachers to provide fire safety education to young people," Gov. Charlie Baker said in a press release.

The average number of children dying in fires annually has dropped by 74% since the S.A.F.E. Program began, Baker added.
