Medford Fells Ice Rink Opposed By Mayor, City Council
City officials sent Gov. Baker a letter formally opposing the proposed 5-acre recreational facility.

MEDFORD, MA – A proposed 5-acre recreation facility on Medford's part of the Middlesex Fells Reservation is lacking key support from city officials. Medford Mayor Stephanie M. Burke sent a letter this week to Gov. Charlie Baker formally opposing the complex, which would include an ice rink, ranger outpost, meeting space and a possible dog park.
The project is being proposed by Winchester Youth Hockey and the Friends of the Winchester Ice Rink. A brochure for the proposal argues that it will "unlock inaccessible trails and areas of the Fells for greater appreciation and use."
Burke's letter cited potential impacts to the area's plant and animal species and open space.

"Preserving this forest remains a key priority, as it is home to 130 different plant species, 67 butterfly species and an Audubon Important Bird Area," she wrote. "Currently, this is the only uncontaminated area in the Middlesex Fells, which serves as a popular destination for many to enjoy the outdoors."
Burke also took a swipe at State Rep. Michael Day, who added a line item into the spending bill to fund the proposal. Day, who represents Winchester and Stoneham, "does not have the best interest of Medford residents," Burke wrote.
