Medford Joins MBTA's Youth Discount Program

Young people in Medford who qualify can get a special reduced fare MBTA Youth Pass.

MEDFORD, MA — The city has partnered with the MBTA to provide affordable transit to low-income young people. The Youth Pass allows users to purchase a reduced-price Monthly LinkPass for $30 and store value to ride the bus and subway system at a reduced one-way fare, according to the city.

"The MBTA is pleased to partner with Medford in offering the Youth Pass program to eligible young people," MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said in a statement. "Increasing transit access provides young people with critical connections to jobs and education, and we’re eager to continue to expand this program that benefits so many."

Other participating communities include Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Lexington, Malden, the North Shore, Quincy, Revere, and Somerville.

Young people living in Medford interested in applying for the reduced-fare Youth Pass should visit the Treasurer/Collector’s Office at Medford City Hall located at 85 George P. Hassett Drive, Room 108, in Medford.

In order to qualify for the Youth Pass, a young person must:

1. Live in a participating city or town

2. Be between 12 and 18 years old and not enrolled in middle or high school (students enrolled in middle or high school may receive a Student CharlieCard through their school)

3. Be between 18 and 25 years old and enrolled in one of the following accepted programs (college and university students may be eligible for Semester Passes):

– Alternative education program (e.g., GED, HiSET)

– Job training or professional development program (e.g., Year Up, ROCA)

– State or federal benefit program (e.g., MassHealth, SNAP)
