Medford Kids Learn to Develop Mobile Apps at Summer Camp

Several school children took part in a computer science camp at Medford High School earlier this summer.

Several school children took part in a computer science camp at Medford High School earlier this summer and learned how to develop mobile phone apps geared toward aiding the city. Everett students took part in the same camp.

While at the camp in July, Medford school teachers and UMass Lowell professors taught the students how to create mobile apps by using MIT’s “App Inventor” program.

The camp was made possible by the Middle School Pathways in Computer Science project, which is a nationally funded project.

The students were introduced to various programs provided by the city. After learning of their task, the students set out to create apps based on the programs.

In a totally hands-on environment, the students learned the many intricate steps that go into the development of a mobile app.

Students created a variety apps including one that assists users with locating healthy food options in the area and another that provide’s a guide to the city’s Farmer’s Market, the Everett Independent reports.
