Medford Limiting Side Street Access To Improve Student Safety

The city hopes to limit cars cutting through side streets when students are walking to school in North Medford.

MEDFORD, MA — The city is enacting a pilot program this fall to ensure students are able to get to school safely. The goal of the program is preventing or minimizing side street cut-throughs in the North Medford area.

Starting Tuesday, Aug. 27, the following streets will be limited to cut-through traffic from 7-9 a.m. (residents will be allowed access):

  • Aquavia Road
  • Brackett Street
  • Sturges Street (at Elm)
  • Baxter Street
  • Wason Street
  • Sturges Street
  • Benmor Street
  • Waddell Street
  • Doonan Street
  • Highland Terrace
  • Rita Drive

Signs will be posted, and police will assist in enforcement.

"Traffic congestion negatively impacts our neighborhoods, infringes on safety and
reduces our quality of life. The Waze App has made Medford side streets a cut through
and taken a toll on our roadways and residents. This initiative will hopefully alleviate
some of the traffic burdens incurred in those neighborhoods," Mayor Burke said in a statement.
