Medford Looks To Improve Safety Outside Brooks School

The project would make improvements to 1,800 feet of High Street, including three intersections from Allston Street to Whitman Road.

MEDFORD, MA — The city is eyeing safety improvements to the area outside the Brooks Elementary School. The proposed project consists of building "bump-outs" with wheelchair ramps, sidewalk improvements and upgraded pavement markings along 1,800 feet of High Street, including the three intersections from Allston Street to Whitman Road.

The proposed roadway cross-section will include an 11-foot travel lane, an 11-foot shared travel lane and a 5-foot bike lane at select locations in each direction. There would also be 6-8-foot-wide parking lanes at select locations and sidewalks with a 5-foot minimum width along each intersection leg, according to the city.

Pedestrian warning signs with push-button-controlled rectangular rapid flashing beacons would be installed at the High Street crosswalks near the Mystic Street, Walcott Street and Woburn Street/Hastings Street intersections.
